The increasing wave of ethnic nationalism and agitations for political independence by the various ethnic groups in Nigeria fueled by mis-governance, biting corruption and grave insecurity in the country constitute serious throats to the continued corporate existence of the country. The agitations cut across the country; from South to North. I remain one of those who believe that the continued existence of Nigeria as an entity holds greater prospect of strength and development for all the ethnic groups. There is no empirical basis or guarantee that the ethnic nationalities, if allowed to secede, they will not experience the vices that are plaguing the country presently. I think we should focus on and put our energies in fighting corruption, ushering genuine progressive citizens into leadership – regardless of their backgrounds, and instilling justice – social, economic and legal – in our national affairs. As Nigerians, we should note that there is still window of opportunity for us to make Nigeria great. We can rescue Nigeria, if we really want. Ethnic jingoism sounds interesting, but it is not the practical pathway for Nigeria. Let’s arise and build a just, progressive and democratic Nigeria.
